Breaking the Stereotype

People usually assume a lot of things about me. I'm petite, have an unusual name and am clearly from another country. Being Indian, I should be book smart, really quiet, shy, and conservative. Right?

Wrong.

Bethesda, Maryland has shaped me to be very different from the “stereotype” I could be. Having lived there all my life, I’m now an outgoing and bubbly person, easily amused by almost anything. Bethesda is enriched in diversity, so I have friends and love meeting people from all sorts of backgrounds. I’ve gotten the best of “both worlds” with a perfect mix of Indian and American culture.

  1. Ok so, I'm not from Baltimore but I have not yet been to Bethesda. How far is it from UMBC and what cultural events/festivals do they have? I know for example in Nashville, we have a lot of art and folk festivals at our centennial park.

  2. If I understand correctly, your home is the place that shaped you as a person. Is that correct? I like where you're going with this but I do wish to know more.

  3. First off, you have an awesome name, just saying. More on subject I really like how your home is a mix of cultures and not just one way or the other.

  4. I understand the concept of stereotypes usually, but in many cases it's just initial impressions- having only heard you respond to our professors attempts to pronounce your name was enough to know you aren't stereotypical!
