My personal belief is to live life in the moment,
making the most of everything. I haven’t always had this belief – in fact, I
used to live my life quite the opposite until a few years ago. A series of
events during the start of my teenage years changed my outlook. In March 2007,
my friend was hit by a car right in front of my eyes – within a matter of
minutes, she went from fine and healthy to fighting for her life. Over the
course of the following three months, I was by her side as she went through
rehab to relearn how to walk and talk. A few months after her accident, on a
seemingly innocent morning, my father collapsed in our home after having a
massive heart attack; he was fighting for his life for a week thereafter.
Luckily, he too survived. Almost losing a close friend and my dad, I was
traumatized and quite honestly…angry. Then, in the spring of 2009, I became
best friends with someone who changed my perspective on life. He was one of the
most vibrant people I’d ever met – always trying risky things and telling me to
live in the moment. Slowly, through his energy and love of life was I able to
look back on the events I had just been through and realize the bigger picture
– while I could have lost my loved ones, I didn’t. I learned that life was
precious and could be taken away at any given second. I was lucky to have a healthy,
happy life and I had to make the most of it everyday. So, following the words
of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around
every once in awhile, you could miss it.”
